A dear friend asked me to photograph her two English Setters. The fact that she lives in South Carolina didn’t faze her and when I enthusiastically agreed, she loaded the dogs up and drove nine hours to get to my little home studio! We let the dogs stretch their legs at a local dog park and I took a few action shots. Then we headed back to the house for a studio session. Since she was staying awhile, we ended up shooting for almost three hours, giving the dogs multiple breaks so that they wouldn’t get too antsy or bored. Both of the dogs were deaf and I was pleased that the signs and body language that I use to work with my own dogs, also worked with them. But boy, I sure wish I could have used my squirrel call to get their attention!
In general, deaf dogs are very attuned to their owners so it helps to have an assistant to manage the dogs while the owner directs their attention and has their hands free to sign commands. It was just the two of us so we made do but there were quite a few amusing outtakes!
