FEATURED POST

| THAT DOGGONE CAT |

Last spring we took in a multitude of neighborhood feral kittens and our livestock guardian dog, an Akbash named Piper, took to them like a mama hen. LGDs have a very strong protective and guarding instinct that makes them weak in the knees around baby animals – from goats to sheep to fowl to, apparently, kittens. I wanted to commemorate Piper’s relationship with the kittens in an image I titled “Protector of the Small” (the title of one of my favorite Tamora Pierce series). The image evolved as I tried to add more personality to it and played around with different kitten poses. I ended up completely overwhelmed by my kitten choices and a massive creative block. While explaining my dilemma to a fellow artist, she looked at the image and said, “Well, the story’s the expression. Forget everything else.” And she was right.

By DanicaDecember 29, 2018

I was approached to do a custom composition in the style of my personal projects. This isn’t something I do often because it’s very time-consuming and personal. But I was willing to give it a try as it was a...

I’ve been a little lax in posting recipes on The Lisping Dog but for Christmas Eve I made this recipe from Food & Wine and I just had to share. I’m not a huge fan of chestnuts but my mom is so I found this...

A recipient of one of my paintings contacted me asking if I could paint her friend’s puppy as a gift. She had a few photos and wasn’t sure which would be the best one to paint. This is totally normal – I...

As much as our pets mean to us, it’s frequently not until they’ve left us that we realize we don’t have a great image to provide us with comfort. Half of the images aren’t even printed, just languishing on our...

Here’s how I created my 2017 International Photographic Competition Merit print – “A Whiter Shade of Pale”. One of PPA’s print competition rules is that you can only use the same subject once. That means that...

This seems like an odd recipe to post in the middle of a brutal summer but we’ve been enjoying some unseasonable cool temperatures for a few days so I whipped out this family favorite. Belgian endives, part of...

Sky and Remy

A dear friend asked me to photograph her two English Setters. The fact that she lives in South Carolina didn’t faze her and when I enthusiastically agreed, she loaded the dogs up and drove nine hours to get to...

I don’t consider myself ambitious or driven but I know that I can be fiercely competitive. Oftentimes, the person I challenge most is myself. My journey as a photographer has been driven by the challenge of...

Your Basic Quiche
