What is digital painting?

Digital painting is a method in which the artist uses a computer and stylus to transform a photograph with digital brushstrokes to create an image that appears to have been traditionally painted. The advantages of a digital painting are that it can be re-sized and printed on any medium desired, it can be completed at a lower cost than traditional oil or acrylic painting, and there’s a faster turn-around time since nothing needs to dry. The painting process is so forgiving that even a small cell phone image can be turned into a frame-able work of art.

This is not a simple filter. It takes hours to bring out details in the reference photographs, clone out backgrounds, and then meticulously build up layers of digital “paint” with different sized brushstrokes and textures. Each image is absolutely unique.

Once completed, the painting is printed on canvas or fine art paper, framed as desired, and delivered to the customer’s door.

Choose your art

Once we’ve settled on the image, I’ll go over your size and printing options. You can have it printed on canvas or fine art paper and framed. There are a lot of choices but don’t panic – we’ll figure it out together!

WORK IN PROGRESS

I will begin working on your painting. This usually takes several days but less than a week. Once it’s complete, I’ll send you a proof. This is where the beauty of digital art comes in. I can still make changes to the image at this point! Once the image is perfect, I’ll send the file off to my professional lab to be printed.

love your art

I will pick up your completed art work and make certain that it’s printed to my quality standards. I’ll sign it, package it up, and either hand-deliver or ship it right to your door, ready to hang!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How much does it cost?
The cost of my paintings is determined by the size and medium on which they are printed. I send the paintings to a professional lab to be printed on either fine art paper or canvas. There are a couple custom framing options that will also affect the price. Prices range from $102 for an unmatted/unframed 8×10 fine art print to $1,013 for a 24×36 framed canvas. My average client spends about $250. Prices are all inclusive – painting, printing, and shipping (but do not include sales tax if you’re located in Ohio) for a single image.
How long does the process take?
Once we’ve decided on the image(s) you’d like me to use and the size and material the image will be printed on, I’ll send you a paypal invoice. Once it’s been paid, I will begin working on your painting. This usually takes anywhere from a day or two to a week. Since the image is digital, we don’t have to wait for any paint to dry! I’ll send you a copy for your approval and then I’ll send the file to my professional vendor to print. This takes a few days but could take up to another week if we’re getting custom framing. I’ll pick the product up, verify that it meets my exacting standards, and then get it packaged up and shipped to you. The longest interval from invoice paid to delivery is about three weeks but is usually closer to two.
What makes a good reference image?

There are usually three poses that translate into a lovely finished product:

  • a headshot with the subject looking directly at the viewer
  • a headshot with the subject in profile
  • a full body shot

Images that show fur/hair/feather detail are best where the subject is close and not in the far distance. I can add in any background so if you have a good close up shot but prefer the scenic background in another shot, send them both along!

Please send any original files without cropping. Some email programs will lower the file size if the image is pasted into the email body so please ensure that you’re attaching the original file to the email instead. If you have a lot of large images, please ask me for a dropbox link so that you can upload them without worrying about file limitations.

Do paintings fade over time?
Paintings on canvas are coated in UV protection and fine art prints are on acid-free cotton rag. Given reasonable care (not displayed in direct all day sunlight), paintings are archival up to 100 years or more. Bet you won’t get that from a CD or flash drive!
Can you change backgrounds or remove distractions?
Yes, absolutely. I can both remove or add backgrounds. I prefer to remove backgrounds and replace them with a neutral painted effect but I can keep the existing background if you would like. I can also add a new background, compositing in a different scene.
Can you have multiple subjects in an image?
Yes, you can have multiple subjects in one image and I can even composite subjects from different photos.
Can you create a painting with all my dogs together from individual photographs?
Yes, I absolutely can. The believability of the final image is impacted by the individual images. Dogs or people should be photographed from the same perspective with similar lighting.
Do you sell digital files?
I only sell finished prints. I used to sell digital files but I found that clients either didn’t print them or chose substandard vendors (or their own printers) for the finished product.  I want to control the quality of the final work so I provide finished art pieces such as framed prints or canvas.
What are your shipping costs?
Shipping is included in the price.
What payment forms do you accept?
I accept credit or debit through Paypal, cash, or check. I will not begin working until your payment has been processed. I do accept payment plans.
Do you have a satisfaction guarantee?
I absolutely do. If you don’t love your painting at any point in the process, I will refund your entire purchase. If you have received your finished product and are dissatisfied, I will ask that you ship it back to me, at your cost, before processing your refund.
Do you paint for other photographers?
If you’re a professional photographer and you’re looking to enhance your brand by offering paintings of your images, give me a call, drop me a line, send me a message! I offer competitive pricing for “Ghost Painting”, painting images that you can sell to clients under your own name.

PRINTING OPTIONS AND PRICES

I carry a selection of products designed to display and preserve your new painting in the best possible way. Give yourself the gift of showcasing in print your most cherished moments.

Use the space where you spend the most of your time to display the images you love.

CANVAS GALLERY WRAPS

A canvas gallery wrap is a simple yet classic way to display your painting. The image is professionally printed on a satin finish canvas and hand-sprayed with a protective UV coating before being wrapped around a hollow, inflexible 1 1/2″ solid surface base. The solid base prevents your canvas from sagging or being punctured like a traditionally stretched canvas.

The back of the canvas is sealed to protect the image from dust and then a sawtooth hanger is attached to allow you to easily hang your canvas from a nail. This printing option does not require a frame and arrives at your door, ready to display!

All paintings are signed and are labeled with a certificate of authenticity.

Framed Canvas

If you’d like to dress up your canvas, consider adding a frame. Both traditional and float frames are available. Float frames allow the gallery wrap canvas to nestle inside a wood frame that allows a bit of space to see the artwork going around the edges.

Frames available in a variety of styles and colors. Due to the custom framing, the turn-around time for framed canvases will be longer.

Framed print

Perhaps you prefer a more traditional framed style. Your painting is professionally printed on fine art paper, an acid-free 100% cotton rag which is archival for up to 100 years, then custom matted and framed. We’ll work together to find the best frame to complement your image.

Due to the custom framing, the turn-around time for framed prints will be longer.

DIY print

Are you particular about your decor and would prefer to mat and custom frame your own print? No problem. I offer my images printed on fine art paper in standard sizes, 8×10 to 16×20.

8×10 and 11×14 prints arrive in boutique packaging that is perfect for gifting.
