A Painting Filled with Love—and Stardust

When I received an email from a local couple asking about a custom painting, I had no idea it would become one of the most extraordinary projects I've ever taken on. Their vision? A playful, classic scene reminiscent of the famous dogs-playing-poker image, but featuring their six beloved dogs who had passed: Daphne, Abby, Rocco, Toby, Bridget, and Hayden.

At a grand 30 x 60 inches, it’s the largest commission I've completed to date. We included personal touches and hidden Easter eggs throughout: Toby, the retriever, with his ever-present blue racquetball; mischievous Rocco discreetly hiding an ace; and Bridget, lovingly known as the "bully," holding the majority of the dog bones. Family photos, including wedding portraits, decorate the wall behind them, and an OSU Buckeye logo chandelier pays homage to their beloved team.

I digitally painted all the components and had it expertly printed in Scotland; the canvas arrived ready for the hand-applied acrylic enhancements. After hours of meticulous detailing, the painting finally captured the warmth, humor, and deep affection these wonderful dogs brought to their family’s life.

But perhaps the most touching aspect of this painting is something you wouldn’t notice at first glance. The client had a unique and heartfelt request—to incorporate a small amount of their dogs’ cremated remains into the painting itself. Initially unsure how to approach this respectfully and artistically, I remembered a favorite quote:

“The molecules of your body are the same molecules… that burn inside the stars themselves. We are starstuff.”

Inspired by this beautiful sentiment, I decided to give these beloved companions stars in their eyes. After carefully sifting a small amount of the ashes, I mixed them gently into a clear acrylic gel medium and then blended in a stunning metallic bronze paint, creating luminous highlights in each dog's irises.

Handing off the finished piece will be a profoundly moving experience—knowing this painting holds not just memories but the very essence of cherished lives. Truly, it's a painting filled with whimsy, memories, and just a touch of stardust.
