What does it mean to commission artwork?
"An artwork commission is when a client or approaches an artist to make a custom artwork specially for them, rather than buying an artwork that the artist had already created. When you commission a piece of art, you collaborate with the artist to develop ideas for the artwork – you may have a vision in mind, a purpose for commissioning art, or an intended place for the art commission, and you communicate this to the artist. The artist then creates custom art based on your preferences."
Océane Pouélé, Curator, Researcher & Editor at Artelier
What Is THE Commission Process?
1. Initial Connection and Refining Your Vision
Let's start with a chat. Reach out to me through my contact form to kick off the process. Share a bit about your vision, your subject (pet or otherwise), and any initial ideas you have. We'll discuss your preferences and any specific details you envision like environmental backgrounds or colors.
2. Research and Inspiration
Gathering the good stuff. I'll ask you to provide photos, stories, and any other materials that showcase the subject’s personality or your vision for the final painting. Don't worry about perfection; even poorer quality images can tell a story. You can also include screenshots of other pieces you like as inspiration.
4. Concept Development
Sketching it out. Based on our discussions and the materials you've provided, I'll create preliminary mockups or concept images. This is a collaborative phase where your feedback is invaluable. Once the mockup is approved, you’ll receive an invoice for the remaining balance of your painting.
3. Agreement, Payment, and Timeline
Setting expectations. Once we're aligned on the concept, we'll formalize the details: project scope, pricing, timelines, and any other specifics. Transparency is key to a smooth process. I’ll provide you with a quote, a contract, and an invoice for a non-refundable deposit, which will be credited to the final cost of your painting.
5. Creation Process
Bringing your vision to life. I begin the digital painting process, carefully crafting the portrait to capture the nuances and personality of the subject. Once the digital painting is completed, you will have the opportunity to review it and any minor final adjustments can be made to ensure the artwork matches your vision. The completed digital portrait is then printed on high-quality canvas and hand embellishments are added, enhancing texture and depth.
6. Final Review and Delivery
The big reveal. Upon completion, I’ll send you images of the finished painting and I'll arrange for the safe delivery of your custom piece.
Enjoy Your Painting!
I love receiving photographs of my work once it arrives at its new home. Please feel free to share a photo of the finished piece in your space!
Choosing the Right Style for Your Portrait
I offer two distinct styles of custom paintings to suit different artistic visions:
Signature Portraits
A timeless option featuring one or multiple subjects against a simple, painted background. These portraits keep the focus on expression and detail, making them a classic choice.
Each framed canvas is printed in Scotland and hand-framed with exceptional craftsmanship. Back in my studio, I apply custom acrylic brushwork—adding dimension, texture, and a unique artisanal finish to every piece.
Prefer a frame-free look?
A gallery wrap canvas—with the image extending seamlessly around the edges for a museum-style finish—is also available by request.
Storyscapes
Go beyond a simple backdrop and place the subject in a fully realized setting. Whether it’s a beloved backyard, a favorite trail, or a meaningful landscape, these backgrounds add depth and narrative to the piece. Because of their complexity, Storyscape Portraits involve a more detailed design process, often requiring multiple mock-ups to refine the vision. This added depth and customization make them truly one-of-a-kind. Pricing reflects the time and intricacy involved. A $200 non-refundable deposit is required once we begin the mockup process to reserve your spot and cover the collaborative design work involved.
Storyscapes are printed on premium canvas in Scotland, using the same trusted lab favored by fine artists across Europe. These portraits are framed by hand to complement the rich detail and layered storytelling in your custom scene. Once the canvas is back stateside, I add hand-painted embellishments to give the work dimension and character—so no two are ever alike.

Timelines vary depending on the scope of the project and the time of year, but most commissions take anywhere from 4-8 weeks to deliver a finished product. The design phase happens first, followed by painting, proofing, and printing.
If you’re working toward a specific date, let me know early and I’ll be honest about what’s realistic.

A digital painting is created by hand using a stylus and tablet, much like traditional painting, just without physical brushes and canvas in the early stages.
This is not a filter. It takes hours to bring out details in the reference photographs, clone out backgrounds, and then meticulously build up layers of digital “paint” with different-sized brushstrokes and textures. Each image is absolutely unique.
Once the painting is complete, it’s printed on canvas and finished to create a physical piece meant to be displayed and enjoyed, not just viewed on a screen.
IS IT REALLY ART?
Absolutely! There are many different way to create a piece of art, from oils to watercolors, papier-mâché to ceramics... digital painting is just a different technique. It requires years of practice and experimentation and a solid knowledge of how the software reacts to your input. We use different digital brushes and techniques to achieve the results we’re looking for.
While there are many powerful programs out there that promise to convert your photographs into paintings, no computer algorithm can replicate the thoughtful brushstrokes of a digital artist. Proof of that is that each artist has their own unique stye that is identifiable by the people familiar with their work.
Whether you choose a digital painter or watercolor painter or felt artist to create your heirloom artpiece is dependent entirely on how you feel about the artist’s style. The fact that the medium is digital should not discourage you - if you love it, that’s all that matters!

There are usually three types of images that translate especially well into a finished painting:
A head-and-shoulders view with the subject looking toward the camera
A profile view
A full-body image
Images where the subject is reasonably close to the camera tend to work best, as they allow me to see details in fur, hair, feathers, and expression.
Rather than trying to choose “the one perfect photo,” I prefer to see a small collection of images. For most commissions, 5 to 50 images is ideal. This gives me flexibility to combine the best elements from multiple photos and create a more natural, polished result.
You’re also welcome to include inspiration images, whether they’re examples of backgrounds, lighting, poses, or artwork styles you’re drawn to. These don’t need to be of the subject itself.
To make things easy, I’ll provide a Dropbox link for uploading files, so there’s no need to worry about email size limits. If you’re working from a single image and would like that exact photo painted, you can simply send that file directly.

Every painting I create is a custom, collaborative process—designed to honor your subject in a meaningful, lasting way. I want you to love your portrait, and I’ve outlined the policy below to keep things fair and clear.
The Design & Consultation Fee covers professional creative work already completed, including consultation and mockups. If you decide not to move forward after the design phase, that fee reflects the time and expertise invested.
The process is structured to avoid surprises, with collaboration and approval built in before the final artwork begins. My goal is always to make sure you feel confident and excited before moving forward.
I truly want you to be happy with your painting, but also need to protect the time and care that goes into each piece—especially during the design phase. If you ever have questions about this process, I’m always happy to walk you through it.
Need Something Different? Not every project fits into a standard frame. Since the original painting is digital, it can be reproduced in many creative and unique ways—like artwork for an RV graphic, digital usage for a breed ad, or another custom application. I’d love to hear about your ideas! Send me a message and I’ll be happy to provide a tailored quote just for you!
