The Outlaws: jESSE JAMES AND FRANK

In the summer of 2014, Lisa Renee began her search for a female English Setter. But when she responded to an online listing, she was met with something entirely unexpected—two male orange belton puppies in Iowa who needed a home, fast.

She didn’t hesitate. Within the hour, she was on the road to meet them. And just like that, Frank and Jesse James became Missouri boys.

Named after the infamous outlaws—whose historic stomping grounds ran just down the road—their names were fitting, and not just because of geography. Frank and Jesse were a bonded pair, mischief-makers from the start. They once pulled an entire pan of homemade lasagna outside to enjoy alfresco. It wouldn’t be the last time they made their own rules.

But for all their outlaw tendencies, they were tenderhearted. Devoted to each other, and just as devoted to the people who brought them home. They spent their days exploring the outdoors, side by side, with joy in their hearts and dirt on their paws.

It’s rare to witness a bond like theirs—two brothers, living ten years in perfect companionship, never far from each other’s side.

This portrait was commissioned as a tribute to that bond. To the laughter. The lasagna. The long walks in the woods.

To Frank and Jesse James, the only kind of outlaws you want in your life forever.

Both boys have left us but Lisa Renee had a lot of wonderful photographs of them. Using the images, I created a mock up of the two boys on point, then started refining the background elements until Lisa was happy.

Then I painted it digitally.

The digital painting was then sent to a trusted vendor to print on canvas. (click to see full-screen)

Adding the acrylic embellishments.

The finished painting, ready to ship out.
