ANNIE

Melinda was navigating the turbulent waters of a difficult divorce when a call from a friend introduced her to a one-year-old tri-colored English Setter named Annie—a dog Melinda had dreamed of for years. Despite having just moved into a new house without a fence, Melinda's determination made Annie’s arrival possible soon after a fence went up.

Annie settled instantly into her new home, choosing the pillow opposite Melinda’s on the bed and staying faithfully by her side from then on. Annie had an extraordinary sense for comforting Melinda during tough times, often gently climbing into her lap, wrapping a paw around her, and offering quiet solace until tears dried and peace returned.

Remarkably intuitive, Annie effortlessly grasped house rules, including waiting until fresh linens covered the bed before jumping up—a rule Melinda had never explicitly taught her. Annie’s special quirks, like her love for tea and quiet moments spent watching birds from the hammock or porch swing, created countless precious memories. Even on her last day, Annie enjoyed a final bowl of tea and a peaceful rest in her beloved hammock.

“She came into my life at the exactly right time. She was what I needed to get though that rough patch. To go from being ignored and belittled to having this dog that all she asked for was to get into my lap and be with me. I think we healed each other.”

Annie didn't just bring warmth to Melinda's life; she provided healing, comfort, and joy, proving that sometimes, the greatest gifts arrive exactly when they are most needed.

Using the images, I created a few mockups and then started refining both the dog and the background elements until Melinda was happy.

Then I painted it digitally.

The digital painting which was then sent to a trusted vendor to print on canvas. (click to see full-screen)

Adding the acrylic embellishments.

The finished painting, framed ready to ship out.

A glowing review from Brandy’s mom:

I just received the portrait I commissioned to recreate my beloved Irish Setter, Brandy. He was my first dog and died in 1987. Danica Barreau, master artist, brought him back to life!
