OHIO ARTIST OF THE YEAR
Danica Barreau was recently awarded the title of “Ohio Artist of the Year” for the 6th time by the Professional Photographers of Ohio during their annual convention award ceremony on July 21st. She also earned first place in the categories of “Animal Portrait”, “Artist Open”, and “Restoration” during image competition as well as a judge’s choice award for her cat portrait “Pet Me, I Dare You.”

On a sunny day in March I drove up to Akron to photograph puppies. Yeah, it’s a dream job, I know it! I had been commissioned to create a painting for the ESAA National in September and I wanted some reference images of playful puppies. I spent several happy hours chasing these guys around the yard and filling up my cameral “roll”.

AI Generated Art - From the Perspective of an Artist
Was Artificial Intelligence (AI) part of your vocabulary prior to 2022? AI’s been around for decades, and you’ve been using it every day. Have you used Google Maps or Waze to get to a destination recently? AI. Used your face to unlock your phone? AI. Asked Siri or Alexa a question? AI. Autocorrect, spellcheck, Google search, customer service chatbots, texts about weird charges on your credit card, photographing a check to deposit, Amazon and Netflix recommendations, auto-masking in Photoshop… that’s all powered by AI.
These applications of AI technology haven’t raised much concern or controversy. But professional photographers and artists worldwide are in an uproar and asking questions about an AI usage that applies to nearly everything we do. AI Art.
Exactly what is AI art? Is it legal, copyrightable, ethical? Should you use it? Will AI art kill fields like professional photography, graphic design, and illustration? By exploring the history, mechanisms, and current legalities of AI art, perhaps we can reach some conclusions.
LOCAL ARTIST EARNS MASTER OF ANIMAL IMAGERY CERTIFICATION
On April 16, 2023, Grove City, OH artist and photographer, Danica Barreau, was one of only nine individuals in the world to be awarded the “Master of Animal Imagery” certification by the Animal Image Makers.
